P0171 and P0174 Codes - Don't Replace an Oxygen Sensor Before Reading This

So your car's Cel (Check machine Light) is on and you had the codes scanned at a local parts store. Your car has whether a P0171, P0174 lean fault code or both stored in the computer, these codes are based on Oxygen Sensor (O-2) readings. A lean code or codes indicate that there's too much oxygen in the exhaust. Remember parts shop have employees that have good intentions but they may not have the touch requisite to explain what the trouble codes really mean. These codes are based on oxygen measurements in the exhaust. A common mistake with lean codes is to replace the oxygen sensors. This could be a very high-priced mistake that will not fix the problem. Especially if both codes are present, because the chance of both O-2 sensors failing at the same time is very unlikely.

Most likely the cause is a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak can be caused from a vacuum hose, intake gasket or maybe even a leak in the air intake hose from the Maf (Mass Air Flow Sensor). Listen for a hissing sound that may lead you to the source of the problem. Some technicians will use a propane bottle with a hose attachment to help pinpoint vacuum leaks. With today's computers it's not quite as easy to check for vacuum leaks this way because the Ecu (Electronic operate Unit) will compensate quickly for the added fuel and a convert in idle is harder to notice. Oxygen sensor readings can be monitored with a scan tool while checking for leaks with propane, by finding for increased readings when enriching the mixture. Someone else way technicians can check for vacuum leaks is with a smoke test. By introducing smoke into a vacuum hose on the engine, the leak will be revealed when the smoke escapes from the question area.

Oil Filter Chart

Aftermarket air filters that use oil on the element can sometimes damage the Maf. Over oiling the air filter may allow some excess to get on the Maf sensor wire or element. This can alter the reading, fooling the Ecu into finding more or less air flow therefore changing the air/fuel composition incorrectly. I once worked on a car that would not start that had a question with a Maf. When finding at the wire in the Maf, there was a burned piece of trash that made it's way past the air filter. After cleaning the sensor the car ran perfectly. The ash that was on the Maf sensor wire was altering the reading by enriching the composition so much that the car could not run. After talking with the customer, he said the air filter was just changed. This was obviously when some trash got into the air intake hose that placed on the hot wire of the Maf.

Fuel Pressure could also cause a lean condition. If the fuel filter is clogged or the fuel pump pressure is low, there could be higher level of oxygen in the exhaust also. Most of the time though, the Ecu will compensate for the reduced fuel volume. So this is one of the least likely causes of a lean code.

This is a quick how-to video on replacement of the water separating fuel filter on a 2008 Mercury OptiMax 250 Pro XS outboard. The procedure is very simple and probably applies directly to any of the high performance 3.0L V6 outboards. I intend to put together videos covering many routine maintenance items for these engines. Chassis and gearcase lubrication, spark plug removal and replacement (not completely straightforward on an OptiMax engine), water pump impeller replacement, etc. Hopefully the quality of future videos will be better. Lighting was not adequate for this one, among other things. This was done partly to help others, partly to help ME remember how to do these things, and partly as an exercise in video recording and editing. Mostly that last thing...I need a lot of practice. :)

The first step was (when it was operational) to use a new valve to determine the relation of the quantity knob position and the quantity of oil, which are now displayed on a graph in order to compare it later with old valves. The hydraulic experts among the viewers will immediately see that the chart used with this tester is not consistent with the 20 bar test chart from Bosch-Rexroth. I was very impressed with the construction of the air filter chamber. Poor air filter design shortens the life of many consumer model blowers. The RedMax 8001 relies on a 2 stage air filter. This is my Yamaha DT 250, sweet fun bike. I bought it bout 2 weeks ago as my first bike, but I want to get it registered and stuff, but I am thinking of possibly trading it for a bike with a title for less hassle. First kick fist start, pretty fast and snappy, good mpg, two stroke to it's cheap to maintain and part are on ebay for super cheap. I mess with mopeds, so two stroke repair is super eazy and fast for me, but it is even to a monkey with a wrench. In the middle when im messing with the carb, im showing that the oil injectors work, so no dirty messy mixing. I was gonna ride it at end, but decided that might not end so well for me or the camera with no handstrap. I will get a video of it riding today.
